Visit the Chicago Cultural Center from February 6-May 1, 2016
And see Theo Jansen's amazing kinetic artworks, the strandbeests. If you are lucky, you might get to see one demonstrated or even take one for a walk! http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/strandbeest.html Best of all it is totally FREE! The Chicago Cultural Center is across the street from the North end of Millenium Park. The University of Chicago even accepts mail for Indiana Jones! (See the LINK here)
But, really, Indy was based on a U of C professor... who happened to found an amazing museum on the University of Chicago campus. It's called the Oriental Institute, it is FREEEE, and amazingly in the city, PARKING is free in a garage a couple of blocks away, on weekends. Check it out here: Oriental Institute YOU SHOULD GO! Did you know? TripAdvisor lists the Art Institute as the NUMBER ONE attraction in all of Chicago! It is free to visit the Art Institute every Thursday night from 5-8 pm. They are open daily from 10:30 - 5, except when they stay open late on those free Thursday nights!
http://www.artic.edu/visit The Museum of Contemporary Art is FREE on Tuesdays, all year long! They are open from 10 am until 8 pm on Tuesdays, and from 10-5, Wednesday through Sunday. http://www.mcachicago.org/ Also, MCA Chicago notes: Blue Star Museum: Year-round As life-size horses memorializing fallen police officers begin to dot Chicago on September 11, please remember that all active duty police officers, firefighters, and military personnel, plus their family members, receive free admission to the MCA, all year long. (For general admission only. Not valid for ticketed exhibitions or special events.) Check out the Field Museum website for their free days- they list them by date HERE. This famous painting, owned by the Chicago Art Institute, is on display in a very special exhibit, titled Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity. It is a fantastic exhibit, and includes actual dresses, shoes, hats, top hats, and other items from the era, sometimes from the very person in the portrait! It is one of the best curated exhibits I have seen in a while, really amazing. There is one nude painting, so check with the museum for more information if this may not be appropriate for your family. Check out the slideshow below! The Art Institute Page has a ton of resources. Take a look around the Curious Corner to find out more about the collection before you visit! (All kids under 14 ALWAYS have FREE ADMISSION!)
